Remembering Historical Significance
In 1968, Apollo 8 etched a seminal chapter in aerospace history, achieving the remarkable feat of circumnavigating the Moon—a groundbreaking moment that marked a significant milestone in human space exploration. Each astronaut aboard this historic mission was equipped with the OMEGA Speedmaster, an instrumental timepiece that became an indispensable companion in NASA's lunar endeavors. Presently, OMEGA pays tribute to this historical achievement with the introduction of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon—a synthesis of cutting-edge technology, exquisite materials, and refined craftsmanship.
The genesis of OMEGA's lunar-inspired timepieces began with the unveiling of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 in 2018, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the mission. Building upon this legacy, OMEGA has revisited the original design, enhancing it with heightened finesse and precision.
The Calibre 3869 - The "Moon" of the Show
The focal point of this horological masterpiece is the Calibre 3869, distinguished by a laser-ablated Moon relief meticulously incorporated onto its blackened main plate and bridges. This dual-sided design captures both perspectives of the Moon—the dial-side mirroring our terrestrial view and the reverse unveiling the astronaut-exclusive dark side. Employing advanced laser technology, the Moon's intricate details emerge sharply, harmonizing with light grey coated wheels and a dark grey gold coated balance wheel.
Beyond its aesthetic prowess, the manual-winding Calibre 3869 attains the prestigious Co-Axial Master Chronometer standard—an emblem of Swiss horology's pinnacle in precision, performance, and magnetic resistance.
The Moon-inspired movement is elegantly visible through the watch's transparent dial and caseback, expertly crafted from sleek black anodized aluminum. The 44.25 mm case, polished bezel, and caseback are meticulously constructed from black ceramic, enriched with a bright white enamel tachymeter scale.
The Details - OMEGA Dials Don't Miss
Noteworthy details include the yellow-varnished chronograph seconds hand and the matching rubber strap, featuring a touch of yellow in its interior. An exquisite addition is the patent-pending small-seconds hand at 9 o'clock, fashioned in Grade 5 Titanium and resembling NASA's Saturn V rocket—a subtle yet impactful tribute to the Apollo program.
Turning to the caseback, a narrative unfolds through engravings, culminating in the iconic “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE”—the last words spoken before Apollo 8 disappeared behind the Moon, ushering in a radio blackout.
